Hello everyone! Since I'm one of the privileged few who can go online 24/5, I'm lunching a new thread: [glow=red,2,300]THE OPEN SOURCE AND FREE SOFTWARE NAZI[/glow]Hahaha... Here, I'll be posting links to cool free softwares that many of us could use. At the risk of getting flamed at by Sharp (peace tayo Keen ), I'm not exactly fond of sucky proprietary software that make me pay. That is the main reason why I always scour the net for quality software applications that are useful... and free. The fact that I always find nice free alternatives to proprietary softwares is mainly why I tend to dislike Microsoft products (except Windows XP and all Visual Studios). Although Windows XP does rock, really, if it wasn't for the games, I'd leave Microsoft Windows alone. I also encourage everyone to post here. Comments and links to other freeware/opensource software you find is very welcome. So... without any further ado...

STARTUP MANAGERStartup Manager is a program that provides you the possibility to manage the Windows startup procedure. It offers you the possibility to control which programs automatically start up and more. Operating System: 64-bit MS Windows, All 32-bit MS Windows (95/98/NT/2000/XP), Vista, WinXP, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 License: GNU General Public License (GPL) Category: Security, Boot, Systems Administration website:st-m.sourceforge.net/bloodrush's comments:
I know many of you guys are sick and tired of dealing with pesky system tray icons and alerts that suddenly pop out of nowhere like a your baby brother in steroids (well... maybe not steroids... just sugar).
The thing about these little unnecessary processes is that they eat up a lot of memory and processor resources. However, if the programmers were kind enough, they would probably actually show those icons, and then you can manually disable em'.
Well, that is if they are nice. But what if what got unknowingly installed was some adware? Well, worry no more!
With Startup Manager, you can control precisely which things get started everytime you log in to Windows. Not only that, some spywares and even trojans get detected (not prevented) by this software. From there, you can get rid of unwanted processes that clutter up your memory.
Some of us (specially mga close kay Acer) had used the startup managing tool that came with XP Optimizer. However, we all know that thing is proprietary and we shouldn't even be using it.
Licensed under GPL (General Public License), which means this software is free . It's source can also be used to make forks or another software derivative provided it's also to be distributed under GPL. So we don't have that voice inside of us saying "Ahahaha ayan ka nanaman pirated software nanaman gamit mo ah!!!" You can download the installer or the source code (which you can modify and compile to your heart's desire).
The GUI is very user friendly. Don't get turned off when the thing tells you "process can not be enabled/disabled". All you have to do to disable that unwanted process is have it deleted all in all (right click -> delete). Be careful though, this software gives you complete access to system processes that loads up during startup. Disabling (or worse... deleting them) may lead to a system crash.
Oh sya... download na:

Yes... thankfully! It will definitely warn you if you are about to disable a critical OS process... only, the alert won't seem so urgent. That's how come you have to watch out.

ClamWin is actually just a front end to ClamAV, an antivirus creation library. ClamAV itself is quite popular around Linux circles (na of course hindi tayo kasali) due to it solving ALL known viruses that so far propagated through Linux. The MACOSX version is also there, but is almost uneccessary due to the few viruses that infected MACS get patched by APPLE immediately. That leaves only ClamWin to be desired. Unfortunately, the very open source nature of it is a risk in itself. Virus makers can simply look into the inner working of ClamAV and look for vulnerabilities. Also, development isn't active given the fact that there are very powerful non-open source freeware antiviruses out there (AVG comes to mind). ClamWin is mediocre at best sadly. Fortunately for future AntiVirus developers out there, they can go ahead and read the source code and learn from it.
